What to Do Before Leaving for College

Overwhelmed with everything you need to do before heading to college? Familiarizing yourself with everything on this list can help make the process easier. 1. Contact Your Roommate That first conversation is pivotal for getting to know each other, for building your relationship as roommates, and for figuring out whos going to be bringing what. A great roommate can make all the difference in school. 2. Organize All Your Purchases Knowing what to bring is just as important as knowing what not to bring. Deciding on what kind of computer youll have is also a big decision that will influence several aspects of your college life. (Can you bring it home? Is it powerful enough to run graphics programs or economic models youll need for your major?) 3. Understand Your Financial Aid The last thing you want to have happen is for finances to get in the way of your academic progress (yes, it really does matter if you miss that deadline for submitting your FAFSA). Make sure your finances are in order—and that you understand all you need to do while youre in school. 4. Make a Budget Youll need to know, from your first day on campus, how much money you can spend on certain things, whether or not youll need an on-campus job, and how much money you should have at the end of every month so you dont have to beg your roommate for food come December. 5. Take Care of Your Physical Health Picking the right meal plan and knowing how to make healthy choices in your new environment will greatly aid your time in school. Who wants to miss a midterm because of a stress-induced cold? 6. Familiarize Yourself With College Terminology If your RA tells you that the problem youre having with your TA can best be handled by the dean, will you know what all of that means? What if your cute lab partner is complaining because adjunct professors werent invited to convocation? College life is full of acronyms and new lingo: do what you can to familiarize yourself with it before you arrive. 7. Get the Most out of Orientation Everything from meeting people to making it through your first week takes a lot of courage—but pushing yourself through will make a huge difference during your entire time at school. 8. Plan to Keep in Touch With Friends and Family Its a good idea to know how to manage relationships with your boyfriend or girlfriend, parents, and even siblings. If you talk about how to keep in touch before you leave, everyone will know what to expect. 9. Develop a Time Management System Figuring out how to manage their time is often one of the biggest challenges for college students. Set yourself up early with a system that you know will work for you. 10. Keep Yourself and Your Stuff Safe The last thing you need to be worried about while in school is dealing with something that may have been preventable. Losing your computer, for example, can wreak havoc on your academics—and, if someone breaks into your room while you left the door open, can wreak havoc on your roommate relationship. Its easier to stay safe than to deal with theft. Lastly—an unofficial #11—congratulate yourself on a job well done for getting here in the first place, and have fun!

Analysis Of The Oresteia Trilogy - 762 Words

In the Oresteia Trilogy, the jury deliberates over the conviction of Orestes, as they deliberate the jurors use a method that uses a black pebble that represents the â€Å"guilt† (Aeschylus 21) of Orestes and a white pebble that represents the innocence of Orestes. In literature it is historically noted that the color black is used to symbolize evil or death, whereas, the color white is historically symbolized as purity, goodness, and life. The systemic colorism of people of color, particularly the Black body, continues to be prevalent not only in literature, but in modern American history and political system. This theory is completely evident in American history. For example, racism is used in the American criminal justice system primarily in the incarceration rates of Black bodies. Furthermore, according to The Atlantic magazine’s coverage on mass incarceration amongst the Black community states that 1.2 million Black children with a parent in prison will experience an increase in minuscule achievement in school, behavioral problems, and show signs of depressive symptoms. As the rate of incarceration rises there is also an increase in the inheritance of incarceration amongst young Black men, thus leading to the continuation of mass incarceration amongst the Black community. The systematic oppression of the Black body has been in existence since the first person was stolen off the shores of Africa. And, ever since then America has continued to use the Criminal Justice system to further oppress the Black body into a new form of slavery within the American prison system and increasing the school to prison pipeline amongst people in the Black community. The relationship with each other more consolidated. Also, an industry deems one of the important reasons to make the world become a small village. Although a existence of many agents to make the world as a small village, I believe there are three main reasons of that. The first and most important reason that helps the world to become as a village is global communication. Fifteen years ago or more, life was harder and needs more time to fulfill a small thing. However, today with all the technology around us, our life gets easier. Furthermore, the internet is an immense chance of making the world as a hamlet. The internet has enabled us to do a lot of functions and get so much enjoyment via the possibility of talk and meeting who you want, whatever the distance between you.Likewise, The media is taking an important part to make the world smaller in theory. In the seventies, radio has played the most important role for bringing people closer and know each other by their traditions. That has had a role for people to understand each other with the lack of images that reflect the reality and events. After that, papers are a way to know news with images from a site of events. However, TV replaced them and becomed the most effective in the world during a transmission of live events around the world.A second reason to helps the world to become as village is rapid international transportation. It has the strongest effect on facilitating and strengthening relations between people through travel and tourism and making friends. Trade is one of the important reasons for international transmission because of its impact for example, a commodity industry in a country with high quality forces traders from other countries to travel to the country which made the commodity and buy it to sell it in their country which draws our attention to visit that country and gives it global reputation in the industry. Also, tourism has contributed to a concept of globalization which recognizes civilizations people to other which influenced their thinking and their life style in future and thus be a way of life almost uniform in all parts of the world . In addition, transfer of good s is one of the factors affecting of globalization. For instance, many restaurant in Pittsburgh offer Italian , Indian and Arabic eating on the other hand American restaurants are spread all over the world such as McDonalds, TGI Fridays. This is evidence of globalization in transfer of food and goods. The final reason to helps the world to become as a small village is international relations. Its the most important feature of globalization. International relations have a major impact on peoples relation with each other and because the government decides this kind of relations they have with other countries. The Positive or negative relations with other countries is determined by common interests between countries. If you find common interests of relation that will be more effective and flexible. This helps in all aspects of globalization and the opposite if there is no common interests. For example, dispatching students to the U. S. reflects the common interests between the two countries, Saudi Arabia and United States. To summarize, there are important factors that led to globalization, Communication is one of the most important which has prominent role in intellectual exchange and knowledge between people. As well as international transport is the second step that helped to make the world more converged by traveling for trade or tourism. Finally, common interests between countries represent a fulcrum in the embodiment of the world in political and economic terms.

Howard beckers theroy free essay sample

Howard Becker’s labeling theory starts off by identifying the deviant. Once you get caught doing something, you are identified and labeled for it; it can either be formal as labeled under the law or informal as in labeled with in family and friends. For example, I had two very good friends in high school, Serafin and Brian. They were best buds and always did everything together. Like many teenagers in high school they started to experiment with drugs. Like every other day they would both go smoke weed and get high in the alley afterschool. No one ever walked through the alley unless you were doing drugs or something but that day the police were roaming around the block because a robber had broke into someone’s house, Serafin and Brian happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The cops drove through the alley and had seen both of them smoking, their first reaction was to run but where? When there wasn’t anywhere to run, it was a dead end. So they quickly jumped tried to jump the fence while Brian jumped the fence successfully and got to runaway, Serafin wasn’t so fortunate and ended up getting his pants stuck to the fence. As soon as Serafin got arrested he was immediately identified and labeled. As for Brian he didn’t get caught and never got labeled even though he was there and performing the same deviant actions as Serafin. Once Serafin had got arrested he had to face and go through the sanctions, the consequences. It wasn’t the first time he had got caught doing something deviant. Serafin kind of always got away with things at school because he was such an excellent student academically, except this time he didn’t get caught on school grounds and he was facing two months of juvenile hall and six months on house arrest isolated. Being left isolated, he started to interact with other deviants that committed crimes like his or even worse. Serafin was brain washed and influenced by the wrong people that only lead him to other additional behavior. After those two months in juvy, he was back to school with a different attitude, not caring for his grades and his reputation. He started hanging out with a different crowd and lost contact with all his old friends including Brian. He was mad at Brian for running away without him and because he had left him there on his own when he needed brains help off the fence. Serafin was jealous that Brian didn’t have to face the consequences like he did. Serafin had been labeled and underestimated for his actions while, Brian was left unidentified committing the same action as he did. Like I said before Serafin was a really smart guy and instead of juvy doing him any good and teaching him a lesson, I think it only did him bad being isolated with other deviants. The news got around quick about his behavior and no one wanted to hire him, nor did colleges wanted to accept him. Before all the trouble he got into, he managed to get an early acceptance from the university of California, Santa Barbra and a full scholarship to play baseball there. In within three months he had lost every chance and opportunity he ever had to change his life around. The university took away his scholarship and no longer wanted him to attended there, soon after he got kicked out of school and his home. He started to believe in the labels he was called and what that had to say about him. His self-esteem was never lower, he thought so poorly of himself and so did everyone else. He considered suicide many times before but never went through with it, he thought that nobody would care anyways and nobody would attend to his funeral. Instead he drowned his sorrows in alcohol and very dangerous drugs. He turned to drugs to escape stress and the loneliness. He was homeless and to top it off he was a drug addict at only nineteen, he was so young and he practically threw his whole life away. I haven’t seen him in a while but I sometimes talk to Brian and catch up with him. He says that he is glad he didn’t get caught that day with Serafin and had the chance to flee because seeing Serafin now scared him about how his future would have been. Serafin spent the night at different friend houses until they got tired him and would kick him out, then he would look for another friends house to crash at. He didn’t have the money to help their friends pay rent or to buy himself some food but always had some money for his weed and drugs. It didn’t matter if he had the money or not because all his friends smoked and did drugs like he did, usually his friends would smoke him out and supply him with drugs. Serafin bought large amounts of drugs all time and he decided if he sold some of it for more than what he paid for then he could make some profit. He started selling to his friends and people he knew, before he knew it he had started his own little business around town and it was booming. His deviant career had now started as drug dealer, he was very popular around town; he was the guy everyone went to get their drugs from. He wasn’t making so much money he would of liked to. He started getting his drugs from a supplier for cheap so he could actually make a living out of his profit. Business was going great for him although everything he was doing was illegal and could get him into jail again, stabbed or even killed. His reputation was over and couldn’t get jobs anywhere except for out in the streets making a well amount of money. He is a different guy now, nothing like he was almost two years ago. He had this rough badass image going on, no one messed with him or his business. The people who supplied him with all those drugs heard about him and his loyalty to the game and thought that Serafin and them would make a pretty good team together selling drugs. Their deviant organization was untouchable, Serafin began to become greedy and wanted more and more money than what he already had. He was on top of his game, he no longer sold the drugs on his own, and he had distributers doing it for him. He had his own empire going on, he reached to the top in all the wrong ways. He was ruling the drug business world and was making bank off of it. It was a dangerous and very risky job, not only was he selling drugs but he had to get his hands dirty getting people killed and stabbed. He had to play the part in order for people to take him serious. His organization was huge and with that came a lot of responsibility, he had to make sure that he would never get caught and go back to jail. While this was happening to Serafin, Brian was graduating top of his class becoming an attorney I’ll because he ran away that day and never got identified.
